As a soloist, Stewart has performed concertos and recital programmes with orchestras and in concert series across the country. As a chamber musician, he has collaborated with leading Canadian instrumentalists in a wide variety of repertoire, from the Baroque to the contemporary.
Stewart has been a champion of new music for the oboe, premiering works by Canadian and international composers and contributing to the expansion of the instrument's repertoire. His own compositions for oboe reflect his intimate knowledge of the instrument's expressive possibilities — its capacity for singing lyrical lines, its penetrating clarity in ensemble textures, and its unique ability to evoke both pastoral serenity and intense dramatic expression.
